I don’t recall any artist in the dubstep world who’s music would be as overwhelming as Skrillex. No, seriously. Frikkin love that guy, when life is too much I find no better solution than to listen to his music for 30 minutes. You can scream as much as you want, don’t worry no one will hear you through the wall of sound it creates. After you turn it off, world is so peaceful and quiet again. Mental clean-up through the massive overload.
Skrillex – First Of The Year

In his latest music clip for ‘First Of The Year (Equinox)’ the clean-up continues. Short note to all the disgusting paedophiles – you better give yourself in to the police before that guy gets you.

As a side note – Skrillex always says that his music is majorly influenced by Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Squarepusher and others from 90′s Warp Records. Seems like inspiration for the clips came from there too as this vid clearly reminds me of Aphex Twin’s ‘Come To Daddy’.

On the other note, I’d like to start a new series of posts on my blog. From now on, every Tuesday will be TED Tuesday. What does it mean? Simply, every week I will present you a selected speech I find particularly interesting, sometimes related to topics mentioned on this website, sometimes not really, no. But still interesting, things you should not miss on! Therefore, Ladies and Gentleman, please enjoy the first one of the series:

If you know me, you probably know about my love of Japan, its culture, people, music, movies, technology… everything. I have tried learning Japanese (apparently, it’s not that difficult after you learn all the symbols), I also have tried introduce my friends to japanese music ( fail…). What you don’t know is that for last 3 years I have been waiting for release of the most interesting documentary I have found on-line in years. I believe it was in 2008, the first year of my studies, when I first saw the trailer of ‘Live From Tokyo’. Three years later my waiting is finally over! As read on their facebook page, the documentary will be released tomorrow on August 23rd via the Good Charamel Records! Hurrah!!!

Check out their website for more info and listen to the documentary soundtrack preview!

http://www.goodcharamel.com/?select=live_from_tokyo

PS: A portion of the proceeds from this DVD/ALBUM package will be donated to the Red Cross Tsunami Relief fund in Japan. So if you like the trailer, please join me and buy a copy too!

As a DJ, I love my job and I love the tools I’m using – Akai LPD8 pads & knobs for cue-juggling and fx handling, sturdy little box of M-Audio x-session pro, pocket audio2dj and the core of it’s all – laptop equipped with all the software and music I need. While the first three ones are not particularly expensive, the laptop is the second most precious thing in my life (just after my beautiful girl) and if something would happen to it, I’d probably die. I’m not joking. So every time I go out to play I go through the same set of worries – ‘Maybe I should wrap up my laptop in something soft, for extra protection?’, ‘What’s the booth like? Is it gonna be safe, no drinks spilled over my precious during the set and all sockets safe so I don’t blow up all my electro-babies?’. As laid back as I am, for those matters I can turn into the biggest stresshead you’ve ever seen. That, and let’s be honest. Thanks to all the miniaturization and technological progress DJ’s are no longer required to carry around big massive boxes of vinyl, turntables or even CDJs for that matter plus mixer on top etc etc. Just a laptop and a bunch of peripherals that fit into one backpack. I know, it got so much more convenient, but… I’m sure it could get better!!

Well, seeing newest baby Stanton, my hopes for ultimate all-in-one DJ gear are high. Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce you new Stanton SCS.4DJ! First fully integrated computer, software and controller! “No external computer is needed, the software is pre-loaded. Ready to go, right out of the box. Just add music and play.”

Let’s just look at its features:

Ability to play and mix two tracks directly from the majority of mass storage devices

Automatic Tempo and beat grid calculation allowing tracks to be synchronized quickly

4.3 ” high resolution widescreen LCD with dual frequency dependant color waveform displays, makes visual beat matching easy

Comprehensive Browse, Search and Sort capabilities presented in a simple and intuitive user interface

8 x “Soft” buttons allowing direct access to features, functionality and navigation

4 x “Direct Access” illuminated buttons, with a navigation section

Dual high-resolution 4.75″ touch-sensitive weighted platters, utilizing a high resolution scratch algorithm

Dual built in effects unit functionality with full beat synchronization

Record your mixes directly to WAV format files for sharing or distribution while you play

Auto-DJ mode will mix your playlists automatically using the calculated beat grids

Microphone input with high-headroom and low noise performance

60mm Pitch control, with pitch bend buttons and high quality keylock performance

Multiple USB Connections (1 x Top, 1 x Rear, 2 x Base plus host connection for MIDI Controller mode)

Transport controls featuring PLAY/PAUSE, CUE, SYNC and TAP tempo

1/4″ Balanced TRS and Unbalanced RCA outputs, dual headphone outputs

Internal Media Bay compartment for placement and connectivity of media storage devices

Fully capable MIDI controller functionality

Looks pretty promising, doesn’t it? Maybe it’s not a traktor filled up with 10000 buttons and even more knobs. Actually, it looks very basic, but I must say I really like it. As they say – Keep It Simple Stupid. What’s the most important – with that piece of gear I can forget about carrying my laptop around and leave it at home! And because it’s equipped with all those USB ports you can always expand it with extra equipment. Another thing I love about it is the little screen it has. No more looking away from the decks in order to find a track or control the playback. Not gonna lie, I never was a big enthusiast of Stanton’s devices, probably would put them at the bottom of my to-buy list, but this one is completely different. And it’s price! for less than £500 you get all you need to play a night. No extra software needed, nothing. Compared to Traktor Kontrol S4 that costs £750 itself, this deal looks to me as a real bargain.

I’m going to get hold of one of these in a few days and test it in and out. As soon as I do that I promise to share my impressions with you guys. For the time being, enjoy the promo videos from the Stanton bunch!

And those synth hits…
When Calvin Harris released his ‘I Created Disco’ in 2007 I felt in love. Mr. Harris’ proverbial 5 minutes lasted only one and a half season but my feelings hasn’t changed and are still booming, cherished by carefree, lovely upbeat remixes from Chromeo.

Their latest take on Mayer Hawthorne’s A Long Time kept me going all day today. Oh just listen to it! And then download, as the track is available for free thanks to guys from RCRD LBL.

Ah Ah Ah Ah Stayin’ Alive! Stayin’ Alive!

Hi folks, hope you are having banging summertime!

Here at the spik3s headquaters I’m not so lucky. To be honest I did not have really a chance to notice it is a summer, I’m so busy here. That’s also the reason why there wasn’t many updates here recently. But from now on it’s all going to change so better get prepared!

First of all I improved some of the website functionality. Now reading the posts should be more convenient as the content is accessible straight from the main page. also sharing it with your friends is now just a one click away. Previously you could do it only from the post page, now all the most popular social networks are available in every corner of the website you go. YES!

Another new feature is a little gadget for all the geeks who love playing with their smartphones. We gonna make use of the coolest bit of technology that becomes more and more popular these days – QR codes! Yepp, from now on you can look out for extra content in the post hidden behind these little black’n'white squares. Simply take out your phone at take a snapshot of it!

Last but not least, I decided to share with you links to various musical downloads, releases and bootlegs. Of course, I say no to piracy. Therefore I will be posting only promo content as well as stuff that I think is available legally. In case if I was wrong and publish here something that should not be shared, please let me know. Sometimes it is difficult to decided whether the track was pirated or just uploaded by its authors.

Aite! I think that’s it! Got plenty of stuff lined up to publish here and I’m looking forward to sharing it with you guys. I will keep you posted.

Real Scenes: Detroit from Resident Advisor on Vimeo.

Fed up with London and constant hearing about riots sparking here and there, water canons and rubber bullets? Then follow me on a journey through time and space to learn about one of the most important scenes for electronic music – Detroit.

I love music, once I start listening and digging through the net in search for the best beats there’s no end to it. But what I love even more is discovering the story behind that music. I love reading books and articles on how it all began, where did it start and how the ‘disease’ spread across the globe. Not to mention the documentaries…
Today, while researching for my new dj mix I found a beautiful piece of work about how the Detroit scene looks nowadays comparing to what it was back in the days. Just watch and enjoy.

Somebody please book me tickets to Detroit!
